Most players find the character wheel pretty early, then forget there's a blank slot sitting at the bottom. What the fourth slot is forThe fourth character on the GTA 5 wheel isn't a secret member of the main campaign. It's your GTA Online character. Once you've created an online character, the empty silhouette at the bottom of the wheel is replaced by that custom avatar. From then on, selecting the bottom option sends you out of story mode and into GTA Online. It's less of a hidden unlock and more of a shortcut, but it can feel surprising the first time it appears. If you haven't made an online character yet, that slot will stay blank, no matter how far you are into the single-player missions.
How to make it appearTo unlock that fourth option, you need to enter GTA Online and create your character. The game will walk you through the setup, including your appearance and basic starting details. After that, return to story mode and open the character wheel again. Pull the right stick down, and you should see your online character in the lower slot. Pick them, and the game will begin loading GTA Online. It's not instant, so don't expect it to work like switching from Michael to Franklin during free roam. You're changing modes, and the game needs time to connect.
Can you use anyone else in story modeFor the main story, the answer is no. You play as Franklin, Michael, and Trevor, and the missions are built around those three. There isn't a proper fourth campaign character waiting behind a mission chain or a hidden collectible. That said, GTA 5 does give you another way to mess around with different faces. Director Mode lets you play as many characters and NPCs once they've been unlocked through story progress. You can access it from the in-game phone by dialing 1-999-5782-5368, or through the menus on some versions of the game. It's more of a sandbox tool than a story feature, but it's great for making chaos, testing scenes, or just wandering around as someone you normally wouldn't control.
Why the confusion keeps coming backThe mix-up makes sense. GTA 5 puts the online character right beside the story trio, so it looks like part of the same system. New players often assume it must lead to another playable lead, especially because the slot is visible before anything fills it. In practice, it's just Rockstar tying single-player and online together through one menu. If you want a ready-made profile or a faster route into Online, some players look at cheap GTA V Accounts as a way to skip the slow start, but the fourth wheel slot itself still works the same way: create an online character, then select that character from the bottom of the wheel.
